Three-toed Box Turtle

Terrapene carolina triungis

 

They are found from Missouri, south to Alabama and Texas and are 4 ½ to 5 inches in size.  Their life span is 30-40 years with maximum being 100 years.  The box turtle is diurnal and their habitat is moist woodlands and adjacent damp meadows and flood plains with temperatures around 88 degrees.  Their diet consists of earthworms, slugs, crickets, fruits, sweet potatoes, chicken, dark green leafy vegetables, and mice.
